Named for the span of Queen Victoria’s reign from 1837 to 1901, the Victorian era was a conflicted period of enormous innovation coupled with sentimental traditionalism. The Victorians were preoccupied with pomp and the past, even as their increasingly industrialized society swept forward into the 20th century. The era saw Britain grow into the world’s first superpower, yet it was also a time of social reform, rebellion, and change in virtually every aspect of society. Aristocrats struggled to maintain their wealth, sometimes seeking rich American heiresses to secure their legacy. Men of the middle class rose in power and prominence through their own inventions or well-timed investment in the railroad or other ventures, and some women stepped outside the home to seek work or march for women’s rights.

Whether you like stories of handsome aristocrats and the feisty women they woo or prefer tales of bold self-made men—detectives, scientists, titans of industry—and the suffragettes, shop girls, and typewriter women who challenge them, you’ll find it in stories set in the mid to late 19th century.
